Scottish Arts Council

In March 2007, May Miles Thomas won the Scottish Arts Council's Creative Scotland Award, one of Europe's richest and most significant arts prizes.

The award will help May create The Devil's Plantation, a multi-media project tracing the secret geometry of Glasgow. "It's about the magic in ordinary places, not grand monuments," says May, "and also a great opportunity for me to explore a different kind of storytelling."

Using video, photography, sound and flash animation, The Devil's Plantation will reveal Glasgow’s prehistoric sites and the now-invisible tracks in the landscape. The project will launch as a website in November 2008. In the meantime May has set up a blog to chart her progress as she makes this personal journey to her home city.

"This is more than a prize," says May. "It's an investment of faith in a piece of work that would otherwise fall through the cracks of less adventurous arts funding. It's the best thank you I can think of."
