90 year old Vera Eisner recalls her Hungarian childhood, married life in Romania and her eventual escape to Britain prior to WW2. Uniquely Vera is the narrator of her own story, revealing never- before-seen archive footage shot by her late husband, Josef ‘Bob’ Eisner, conserved by the BFI.
To escape the isolation of rural Romania, Bob and Vera travelled extensively during the 30s. Bob’s filmed record of these journeys reveals a very different Europe from today. Virtually every major European city is featured, in addition to more exotic and resonant destinations such as Mamiya, Dubrovnik and Mostar.
Returning to Britain from South America in the 50’s, the couple built their own home. Thoroughly contemporary in its design it was initially scorned, but now stands as a symbol of the modernity brought to Britain by those fleeing the War.
A forceful and charismatic narrator, Vera takes us on a journey through the last Century. Shot in Hungary, Germany and England, Colentina is a humorous, affectionate and humane portrait of a woman reflecting on a life well-lived and the prospect of a peaceful death.
