THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

There's a wonderful atmosphere in May Miles Thomas' debut feature film, One Life Stand.

It is the story of a working mother (played to perfection by Maureen Carr) who supports her son's lazy ambition to be a male model. When the son ends up working for an escort agency, a well of loneliness and self-disgust opens up in the mother.

The film is one of several striking neo-realist British ventures at the (Edinburgh) Festival. For guts, style and promise it should win the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature.
